Sympathy for the Devil's rhythm is a samba. Keith Richards said, “It started as sort of acoustic folk song and finished like a slightly mad samba, with me playing the bass and recording the guitar later. That's why I don't like going into the studio with songs already prepared". The documentary One Plus One by Jean Luc Godard contains the recording sessions of this song which lasted five days. There was a moment when one of the lights used for recording the documentary fell over and set fire to the whole studio. The tapes were saved but the Stones' guitars were not.
